Volunteerism: A Poem

By Joan C. Dyer

This is a very special word:
Its actions come straight from the heart.
When someone needs help, you avail yourself –
You jump in with both feet and start.

For many years, I have volunteered,
Helping those who have a need,
And always do the best I can
Until every need is freed.

The most important thing I’ve found
Is a satisfactory smile
Both from myself and the recipient:
We have shown ourselves worthwhile.

So don’t forget to volunteer:
Your heart will build in size.
When we complete this activity
Volunteerism will be our prize!

Joan C. Dyer is an Arboretum supporter. Her poems are often found posted in the parking lot kiosk.
