“S’cary Leg Runners” Anticipate Landis 5K

By Gail Browning

As the August 8 perennial” 5K Forest Run / Walk approaches, the S’cary Leg Runners” are stepping up to coordinate the ninth annual event.

The running community in the Schoharie region has a history of participating and supporting one another in local running events. Four area runners, Pam and Chad Newell, Carl Urrey, and David Roy, wanted to run distance events as a team, each of the runners running a leg” in the race. Hence the team name, S’cary Leg Runners” was created.

The group began informally and gradually evolved into a 501c3 non-profit organization. The members are active in races sponsored by the Albany Running Exchange, the Hudson-Mohawk Runners, and the Fulton-Montgomery Road Runners. They organize the 5K Teachers Run in Schoharie, the Landis 5K, as well as several other races in the Schoharie area.

The Landis race has become a favorite with runners, both novice and seasoned, and walkers too. The course traverses several of the Arboretum’s trails, ranging from woodland to fields with rolling hills and offering spectacular views of the Schoharie Valley. The race begins at 9 AM. Registration information is available on-line on the Landis Arboretum website (www.landisarboretum.org). Official tee-shirts are guaranteed for participants who are registered by August 1.

The S’cary Leg Runners encourage families and kids to get involved and in shape – and walk or run in the Landis 5K.
