Let Us Introduce Ourselves: Mohawk-Hudson Land Conservancy

By Mark King

The Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy (MHLC) is pleased to be working with the Landis Arboretum. We share many similar goals including a passion for the beautiful natural areas throughout the Capital Region. By sharing newsletter articles we hope to bring about a great awareness of the work of both organizations. But in case you don’t already know us, here is a bit of background on MHLC.

We are your local land trust, working to improve the quality of life for all residents of the Capital Region by conserving the natural, scenic, agricultural and cultural landscapes of the Mohawk and Hudson River valleys — for all to enjoy. Since our founding in 1992, we have protected more than 3,600 acres of land in Albany, Schenectady and Montgomery counties, including over 1,700 acres open to the public for hiking, cross-country skiing and other educational and recreational opportunities.

We accomplish our mission by acquiring and managing land of significant ecological or scenic value — much of it on the rural-urban interface where development threatens our natural spaces. We also hold voluntary land preservation agreements — called conservation easements — that allow private landowners to protect natural areas from development without selling their land.

By protecting key parcels of farmland and open space, MHLC provides important benefits to those who live in the region, including scenic views, plant and animal diversity, clean air and water, and the chance to explore and learn about the natural features that make our region so special.

MHLC hosts events, hikes, work days, and other community outings throughout the year. Check our website (www.mohawkhudson.org) regularly for dates and other exciting information.
